We visited our creek for the first
time November 12th, 1999. This is an intermittent creek in the
middle of a city park. Lots of people come here to play frisbee
with their dogs or to have picnics with their families. There
are big roads and buildings on all sides of the park. The stream
water ranked chemically "excellent" on all but one
parameter measured - dissolved oxygen. The class found a cool
macroinvertebrate. It was clear and looked like a jelly bean
with a tail. We found out it was a kind of fly that likes low-oxygen
water. Its tail is really a breathing tube it can use like a
straw. It has a neat name, rat-tailed maggot. The creek had
a lot of litter around it. We decided to come back and pick
up trash later. |
