John Dewey Learning Academy
(JDLA) is a charter school that serves students from Jefferson
County. The mission statement of the school is to "provide
an authentic, nurturing, and academically challenging
learning environment for students which is connected to
the world outside of school, is meaningful for students,
and promotes their positive sense of community and enthusiasm
for learning."
JDLA currently serves 35 students from the ages of
13-19. At the core of the curriculum is service-learning,
an instructional method that seeks to involve students
in hands on learning that benefits the community and
helps the students grow emotionally and academically.

JDLA students really enjoy working on service learning
projects that benefit the environment. They are working
with Pheseants Forever, the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife
and Parks, as well as the Kansas Association for Conservation
and Environmental Education, to develop a 190 acre outdoor
environmental education classroom at Perry Lake.
Fall 2001 was the first semester JDLA students have
participated in Streamlink! The school is located in
Lecompton, near the Kansas River. Students tested a
tributary of the river that runs just behind the
school. Students incorporated the Streamlink experience
into the science curriculum as they learned about water
quality and water as a resource. They also hope to initiate
testing of a stream on the 190 acre site at Perry Lake,
as well.
