Kansas StreamLink has taken part in many service-learning/ stewardship projects. We work with Stream Team, schools, and adults interested in giving back to the environment. We have experience in activities listed below but are willing to created new activities that would fit the curriculum or goals of any group as long as the activity benefits water quality in Kansas.

Trail Building: With help from the Kansas Trail Council, the Army Corp of Engineers, and dedicated volunteers we have created a park unique to the Clinton Lake area. The first stage consisted of an information kiosk, benches, and a mulched trail leading to the overlook area. The second stage included clearing of brush, over hanging obstructions, and vegetation along the path. The third stage is the key to long lasting trails. The goal is to have a trail that will not enable water to flow on its path. The idea is to cut out the lip on the down hill side of the trail tread while keeping the tread slightly angled. This will allow water to flow downhill on a natural coarse passing over the bare trail tread instead of along its path.

Bank Stabilization: Some people believe that bank stabilization projects are a complex and very expensive project. But these projects are like everything else, there is more than one way of completing these projects. StreamLink's approach is to harvest willow stake, root them, and drive them into the eroded bank. Although this practice is not applicable to all eroded sites, this wildly used bioengineering method that has remarkable success. Some situations require reshaping of the bank and other upstream issues that may need to be addressed, which is where the big bucks come in. But there are plenty of projects that can be stabilized by simple stream bank plantings.

Stream Clean-Ups: Cleaning stream and lake side land is a task that can be done at any time of the year with little planning or equipment. Trash bags, volunteers, and some water is all it takes to get noticeable results. Kansas Stream participants in the Adopt-A-Park program as well as numerous other clean up events. This type of event can become even more fun when there is a scavenger hunt tied into it. Get some free stuff to give away and hide coupons near trash to be redeemed at the end of the day. People love it!!
